A big data initiative in Washington has helped the state cut emergency room visits among Medicaid patients by 10 percent, according to a new report.
The state introduced an Information Exchange program in 2012, which required hospitals to track patient use of the emergency room. It established a new database that tracks a Medicaid patient’s ER visits, so when a patient lands in the hospital multiple times, doctors can do a more meaningful intervention.
