Demand has been so great at the inpatient psychiatric unit at Seattle Children’s Hospital that leaders are working on an expansion to double its current capacity.
The expansion reflects the outsized need for psychiatric beds in Washington state. The shortage is so acute that many patients have been “boarded,” or detained in hospitals without receiving treatment. Some wait days before they can get into a psychiatric unit.
