Washington state has changed its rules to require state review when hospitals consolidate and change control.
The new rules, when they go into effect Jan. 23, could slow the expansion of Catholic-run hospital systems.
Gov. Jay Inslee called for the old system to be reviewed in July. His decision came after growing public concern about Catholic health systems taking control of secular hospitals and the limited access to reproductive services and end-of-life care those systems offer.
